Chief James Sartell and the Townsend Police Department would like to encourage residents to sign up for CodeRED, the town’s emergency alert system.

The CodeRed Emergency Alert System is a free community notification system available to Townsend residents that sends alerts concerning time-sensitive and emergency information that may impact the area.

All residents and businesses are invited to register for the CodeRED notification system to receive alerts and updates during emergencies, including during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“CodeRED’s comprehensive notification system will provide our public safety departments a reliable and easy-to-use interface to quickly deliver critical information to our citizens during emergencies,” Chief Sartell said. “Fire Chief Mark Boynton and I are looking forward to using this technology to enhance our emergency preparedness plans. We anticipate using the system to notify residents of issues that directly impact public safety.”

Alerts may include notifications about missing children or missing persons, criminal activity, fires, drinking water contamination, utility outages, traffic conditions, various threats to people or the environment and other incidents as deemed necessary by town public safety officials. The alerts are sent to residents via phone call, text message, email and social media.

To enroll online, visit the Townsend-specific CodeRED webpage.

To create an account, users will be asked to either log-in via Google, Facebook or Twitter, or create a separate account with a unique username and password. Users will then be asked to enter their name, address, phone number, mobile provider, email address and which types of alerts they would like to receive (emergency or emergency/general).

After agreeing to the terms and conditions and verifying contact information, users will be successfully enrolled in the program

Residents may also download the CodeRED Mobile Alert app available in the App Store or Google Play, or text “Townsend” to 99411 to enroll in the town’s specific emergency alert system to enroll.
