Chief James Sartell and the Police Department are providing the following update to a report of animal cruelty that was received last week.
On Thursday, April 11, at about 7:50 p.m., officers responded to the Amidon Family Memorial Bridge on Wheeler Road after learning that a person had thrown one or more puppies off the bridge and into Willard Brook. Officers searched a stretch of the brook and found no evidence corroborating that report. The officers contacted the Animal Control Officer, as well as the Ashby Police Department as the bridge is near the town line.
Several residents responded to a social media post about the investigation and provided valuable leads. As a result, Police identified the person who was at the bridge, who consented to a formal interview.
Based on this interview and subsequent investigation, the Department has determined that no animals were harmed, and no crimes were committed. The investigation is considered closed.
Chief Sartell wishes to recognize the investigating officers for their professionalism and commitment to finding the facts of a potentially cruel act. Chief Sartell thanks those residents who played an important role in the investigation, and the entire Townsend community for its ongoing support of the men and women of the department who serve them with pride.
